As of yesterday, we announced the complete Table of Contents for Issue Eighteen. Our blog series has been running over the last two weeks, and you can see from those posts that we are so stoked to be publishing these essays. One of our 2024 Research Grant recipients, Marsha Wilson-Johnson, has written about the history and practice of pyrography – a fascinating craft that I’ve enjoyed becoming acquainted with. I was so inspired, in fact, that I just picked up a pyrography kit for my son to get started. I’ve loved working through all the beautiful images from each of the articles. And all throughout the design process, I’ve been mulling over many thoughtful insights in our interview with chairmaker Andy Glenn. There’s a lot packed into this one. Check out the Table of Contents below:
"All for the Best: An Interview with Chairmaker Andy Glenn"
Peter Hudson – “The Maker’s Eye”
Marsha Wilson-Johnson – “Pyrography: Writing by Fire”
Joshua A. Klein – “With Sleeves Rolled Up: Planing a House-worth of Floorboards”
Michael Updegraff – “For Building a Nation: A Brief History of Lumbering in Maine”
Levi O’Brien – “Like the Faces of Old Friends: Characteristics for Recognizing Wood”
"A Story to Tell: An Examination of a Late-18th/Early-19th-century Stand"
Michael Updegraff – “A New Kind of Apprenticeship”
Paul N. Hasluck – "Beginning Hand Saw Sharpening"
Joshua A. Klein – "Book Recommendation: Tim Ingold’s The Perception of the Environment"
As of this writing, Issue Eighteen is in the hands of our copy editor, and we will be getting it back mid-next week. From there, Mike and I will do our customary copy reading (aloud) as a final, final check before it goes off to the printer.
The cover photograph is based on my article about handplaning miles of wide pine boards. This image continues around the front to the back, which gives a subtle suggestion of the scale of planing.
The last day to get signed up for your subscription will be Thursday the 27th. After that, all subscriptions will begin with Issue Nineteen.
