Issue Eighteen T.O.C. – Marsha Wilson-Johnson – “Pyrography: Writing by Fire”
The art of drawing with fire has been practiced for millennia. From the first person to pick up a charred stick and draw an image, to later (but still ancient) practices of heating metal points in flame and writing or drawing on wood, bone, or other natural materials, it has long been a method of artistic expression. The variations are endless.
In Issue Eighteen, pyrographer, teacher, and 2024 M&T Craft Grant Recipient Marsha Wilson-Johnson shares her work and research into the ancient craft of fire-writing. First tracing the known history of pyrography (limited by the fragile nature of the materials), she then shows how different materials were utilized over the centuries in different cultural contexts and for a variety of purposes. As part of her research, Wilson-Johnson gathered several dozen samples of materials used for pyrography over the centuries and noted their traits and qualities for use.
"Chaos" by Minisa Robinson
A remarkably talented artist in her own right, Wilson-Johnson shares several pieces of her own as well as works of other pyrographers. The stunning detail and beautiful tones of carefully burned wood make for beautiful imagery. Through words of advice and encouragement for those who might seek to try their hand at the craft, Wilson-Johnson offers an inspiring and informative look at the art of pyrography.
